Sore Throat: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention
Sore throat is inflammation of the lining of the throat, causing pain, burning, and difficulty swallowing. Approximately 70–80% of cases are caused by viruses and resolve on their own after 5–7 days without antibiotics. The remaining cases are caused by bacteria, mainly Streptococcus pyogenes, and require specific treatment. You should see a doctor if you have a fever above 38.5°C, a sore throat, or if your condition does not improve after 3 days.
